Migration Health Research Area/Expertise
I bring an interdisciplinary background in medical anthropology and public health to my research and teaching in migrant health. My research is focused on addressing inequities in access to care and health outcomes among migrant communities, with a particular emphasis on the use of participatory community based approaches. My research has encompassed work with a diverse range of migrants and their wider communities, including forcibly displaced migrants, undocumented migrants, individuals who have experienced trafficking, and those who have migrated for family, economic, or other reasons. This research has encompassed a breadth of areas, including mental health, infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, maternal and child health, and sexual and reproductive health. Through partnerships with migrants, community organizations, governmental and intergovernmental organizations, educators, healthcare providers, researchers, and policymakers, I have had the opportunity to generate vital evidence to inform evidence based changes in policy and practice for migrant communities internationally. I have also carried out methodological research to strengthen the knowledge base around how to strengthen research with migrant communities, for example around approaches to participatory research, methods for cross-language research, intersectionality, and the use of creative-based approaches.
