"Pandemonium of the pandemic": Impact of COVID-19 in India, focus on mental health

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has emerged as a global health threat, with every nation facing unique challenges during the outbreak. Such pandemics are much beyond biological phenomena. They have psychosocial and economic implications that might long outlast the infection itself. India recently crossed 50,000 cases and is undergoing a historic nationwide lockdown in an attempt to control the outbreak.

Impact of COVID-19 on the global supply chain of antiretroviral drugs: a rapid survey of Indian manufacturers

Most people living with HIV in low- and middle-income countries are treated with generic antiretroviral (ARV) drugs produced by manufacturers in India - the "pharmacy of the developing world". India's nationwide lockdown in March 2020 in response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic therefore prompted concerns about disruption to this essential supply. A preliminary assessment of ARV drug manufacturers in India in March 2020 indicated a range of concerns.

COVID-19 crisis and urbanization, migration and inclusive city policies in India: A new theoretical framework

This paper is an earnest effort to develop a coherent theoretical migration model by embedding the dynamics of urban economics, ignored by the celebrated migration models such as Harris–Todaro model of migration. The principal motivation behind the composition is the eruption of the COVID-19 global pandemics, which has forced migrant labours (the engine of a globalized economic system) to shift from the urban areas to their origin. This migration crisis has put a serious challenge for the revitalization of the city economy in the post lockdown period.

Mathematical modeling of COVID-19: Impact of non-pharmaceutical interventions in India

In the absence of effective vaccine/antiviral strategies for reducing the burden of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in India, the main focus has been on basic non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs), such as nationwide lockdown (travel restrictions and the closure of schools, shopping malls, and worshipping and other gathering places), quarantining of exposed individuals, and isolation of infected individuals.

Pre and post impacts of covid-19: Air quality index in indian context

The global damage caused by the coronavirus pandemic of 2019–20 has multiple environmental and temperature impacts. The extreme reduction in the scheduled travel has resulted in a decrease in pollution levels in several areas. Lockdowns and other steps culminated in greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 25 per cent. Increases in the volume of greenhouse gasses created after the advent of the industrialization period have prompted average global temperatures to increase on Earth by 2020, creating consequences like ice melting and increasing sea levels.

Migrant Workers' Needs and Perceptions While Lodged in a Shelter Home in India During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Objective: India is combating a large-scale migrant crisis in many states during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The objective of this study was to identify migrant workers needs and perceptions regarding lockdown while staying in a shelter home during the COVID-19 crisis. Methods: This exploratory study was conducted with 54 migrants staying in a makeshift shelter home in Chandigarh, India. Three discussions were conducted with groups consisting of 15-20 participants to maintain social distancing. Five discussion questions were designed to facilitate group discussions.

Manufactured Maladies: Lives and Livelihoods of Migrant Workers During COVID-19 Lockdown in India

The 68 days of lockdown in India, as a measure to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, resulted in an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, unlike any other in the world. In the first half of the lockdown, migrant workers were stranded with no food and money with severe restrictions on movement when a mass exodus of workers back to their hometowns and villages began. In the second half, the workers’ woes were compounded with a series of chaotic travel orders and gross mismanagement of the repatriation process.

Destinations Matter: Social Policy and Migrant Workers in the Times of Covid

The national lockdown of India announced on March 24th 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, left millions of migrant labourers stranded in their destinations. Thrown out of their informal labour arrangements in cities and industrial centres, unable to return to their villages in the absence of transportation, they were stranded for over a month with no income, improper housing and often lack of food. This paper discusses the experiences of men migrating from Chakai block, Jamui district, Bihar, to four Indian states, namely, Kerala, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.

The COVID-19 Pandemic and Internal Labour Migration in India: A ‘Crisis of Mobility’

This paper examines the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on migration. The rapid spread of the pandemic caught countries across the world off guard, resulting in widespread lockdowns that clamped down on mobility, commercial activities and social interactions. In India, the pandemic precipitated a severe ‘crisis of mobility’, with migrant labourers in many major cities seeking to return to their hometowns.
