Migration Health Research Area/Expertise
I have led the health programmes related to migration on behalf of the Australian government over the last decade. In this role I have overseen the policy and instructions that support the legislative environment that successfully sees more than 800,000 pre-migration medical examinations, facilitating the very successful integration of migrants and refugees into Australia. Key to this has been the collaboration with other major resettlement countries as well as assisting with advice through WHO on policy and screening recommendations. Current areas of research in the domain of migrant health include:
• analysis of the Department’s immigration health data to inform pre- and post-migration strategies to protect the Australian community from public health risks and improve migrant health outcomes in Australia
• research to identify individual risk factors to determine exposure and susceptibility to Tuberculosis (TB), and the relationship between risk factors and multiple-entry movement
• a comparative analysis of pre and post migration mental health assessment results
• an evaluation on the ‘cascade of care’ from pre migration LTBI screening through to onshore treatment of children in the first 12 months of the Department’s LTBI policy
