Migration Health Research Area/Expertise
I have broad migrant health interests across a range of cross-cutting domains. I have been working in public health, migration, and population mobility for the past 15 years in research, advocacy and community-based service delivery. Over this time the focus has primarily been on the impacts of migration on HIV acquisition, however, has also extended to broader public health issues including injury prevention and non-communicable diseases, mental health and social determinants, and sexual and reproductive health. I am a social, applied, and intervention researcher using primarily qualitative and mixed methods. I am interested in evidence-informed public health interventions, the role of participatory research and co-design and research-practice partnerships. I am interested in transnationalism and gender as well as the liminal space that forms part of the migration journey. Much of my research has centered on an emerging issue for Australia - increases in overseas acquired HIV in Australia. I have experience with policy advocacy, including the coordination of a national coalition for action on HIV and Mobility which has hubs in a number of jurisdictions across Australia.
