Millions of refugees and migrants reside in countries devastated by protracted conflicts with weakened health systems, and in countries where they are forced to live in substandard conditions in camps and compounds, and high-density slum settings. Although many such settings have yet to feel the full impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the pandemic is now having an unprecedented impact on mobility, in terms of border and migration management, as well as on the health, social, and economic situation of migrant populations globally.

Migration is a natural state of humankind and has been documented throughout history. Some people may flee violence and persecution, while others simply seek a better life. Although migration is often classified into these two basic categories, the reality is more complex and nuanced: people migrate for a myriad of interconnected cultural, economic, religious, ethnic, and political reasons. Depending upon the epoch, migration has been seen in a positive or negative light.

Migration is a social determinant of health. Throughout the migration process, migrants are exposed to a unique set of sociocultural, economic, and environmental factors that may increase their risk of exposure to negative health outcomes, including communicable and non-communicable diseases. Migrants and mobile populations can face many obstacles in accessing essential health care services due to several factors including irregular immigration status, language barriers, discrimination, a lack of migrant-inclusive health policies, and lack of affordable health services.

This publication presents the results of a study conducted by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in the Republic of Belarus in 2018 within the project “Study on nexus between migration and HIV in Belarus” with financial support from the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).

It depicts findings related to changes in the awareness of migrant and ethnic minority school children with regard to risks of the use of specific psychoactive substances subsequent to the implementation of the primary prevention campaign in the public school setting.
