Providing Critical Shelter Support to the Newly Arrived Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazaar Bangladesh

On 30th May 2017 Cyclonic Mora made landfall in Bangladesh’s coastal region, with heavy rains and winds estimated at 117 km/h affecting around 80,000 Rohingyas living in Cox’s Bazaar. According to the rapid assessments, the worst affected sectors are Shelter and NFI, Food Security, WASH, Health and Protection. Under the current Danish funding, IOM will provide critical shelter support to the newly arrived Rohingya in in Balukhali affected by the cyclone.

Humanitarian Assistance to Undocumented Myanmar Nationals and the Most Vulnerable Communities in Cox's Bazar to Improve Their Living Condition and Well-Being

The project aims to provide and maintain humanitarian assistance to UMNs (Undocumented Myanmar Nationals) with health, water, sanitation and hygiene facilities to improve their living conditions in makeshift settlements and host communities. IOM's proposed interventions will focus on strengthening the quality and level of access to health, water and sanitation services in Leda, Shamlapur, Uttar Shilkhali and Monkhali through the continuation of the existing WASH interventions, while new WASH infrastructures will be developed for poor host communities in Chapotkhali village.

Emergency Response for UMNs in Balukali and Kutupalong Makeshift Extended Site

To address the emergency needs of newly arrived UMNs and the existing caseload of UMNs living in makeshift camps and host villages, and respond to the changing needs of the emergency in Cox’s Bazar, IOM proposes emergency assistance for the affected population to achieve the following results; 1. To ensure timely, evidence based humanitarian assistance and protection is provided to UMN; 2. UMNs are able to access shelter and non-food items, and safety risks are reduced; 3.

Improving Access to Health, Water Sanitation and Hygiene for Undocumented Myanmar Nationals Living in Cox’s Bazar District III, Bangladesh

IOM is implementing a comprehensive response to the immediate needs of the arriving UMNs, as part of an inter-agency ‘Joint Response Plan’ and is continuing to provide services for existing needs of UMNs already residing in Cox’s Bazar (CxB). The current project intervention includes Health, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Protection, Education, Coordination, Communicating with Communities and Capacity Building of local NGOs.

Provision of Shelter Support and Other Essential Basic Supplies for Vulnerable Newly Arrived UMNs in Teknaf and Ukhiya Upazilas of Cox’s Bazar District

The recent arrival of over 34,000 UMNs – currently residing in makeshift settlements in Leda, Kutupalong, and Shamlapur, and in villages in Ukhiya and Teknaf Upazilas – has created a strain to the existing living arrangements and shelter infrastructure. Cox’s Bazar district hosts an approximate population of 300,000-500,000 Undocumented Myanmar Nationals (UMNs) in small communities, many of which are mixed with the host population. Both UMNs and the host population suffer from limited access to basic health, water and sanitation services. UMN children are currently unable to access education services and face a life without basic literacy or numeracy.

The project aims to provide humanitarian assistance to UMNs (Undocumented Myanmar Nationals) with health, water, sanitation and hygiene facilities to improve their living conditions in makeshift settlements and host communities. Assessments in Leda, Shamlapur, Uttar Shilkhali and Monkhali ascertained the need of access to clear water, sanitation and hygiene facilities which are key concerns affecting the health of the population.

The target population of the CERF IOM WASH intervention is the Undocumented Myanmar Nationals (UMNs) residing in the Makeshift Settlements of Leda and Shamlapur. Leda contains approximately 16 000 UMNs, whilst the population of Shamlapur is 9 000 UMNs. Access to a safe water supply in Leda Makeshift Camp remains tenuous due to political interference and changing weather patterns. Access to sanitation which meets sphere and national indicators is lacking across the entire target area.

The Government of Bangladesh has mandated IOM as the leading international organization to coordinate provision of humanitarian services for the UMN population in Cox’s Bazar. This places IOM in a unique position to ensure the continued delivery of critical lifesaving provisions in the two makeshift settlements as well as the host community.
