Migration Health Research Area/Expertise
Professor of social epidemiologist with over 10 years experience on research about the health of international migrants, with a focus in Latin America and some additional experience in Europe. Has led multiple research projects on this topic with a multi-methods approach, which results have been disseminated through scientific articles, international conferences, books, and reports. She has collaborated with the Pan American Health Organization, the International Organization for Migration, the Ministry of Health in Chile, and others. She has produced over 90 papers related to health inequalities and international migration, she has led several modules for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes on these research topics. She is currently the director of the Social Studies in Health Research Programme at Universidad del Desarrollo in Chile, and a visiting scholar at the Department of Health Sciences at the University of York in England. Her research has impacted in teaching, clinical practice and health policy in Chile. She created a "welcome programme" for immigrants to Chile in the public primary care sector in 2016, which has attended over a thousand families so far and has been transferred to over 5 other primary clinics in Santiago. She has been a key advisor to the Ministry of Health in the elaboration of the "Health for international migrants policy" that was launched as a milestone for the Latin American region in October 2017. She and her team conduct training courses for healthcare teams on a regular basis, as well as advisory to related themes for healthcare services and policymakers at the local level.
