Institutionalizing Health Care Improvement through Temporary Returns of Somali Diaspora Health Professionals (Phase 3)

The objective of the Phase III project is to “contribute to improved health outcomes in Puntland and Somaliland by strengthening public health institutions in line with government priorities”. The project will incorporate the recommendations identified in the external MIDA FINNSOM Health Project Review & Assessment, placing an ultimate emphasis on sustainability through knowledge transfer.

MIDA Health Northern Somalia - Institutionalizing Health Care Improvement through Temporary Returns of Somali Health Professionals Residing in Finland - Phase 2 (MIDA-HNS 2)

The current proposal builds on the successes and lessons learned during the pilot project implemented in the period 2008-2009. Aiming at contributing to the development of a well-functioning health system and well-performing health workforce in Northern Somalia this project proposes a mechanism to facilitate the temporary assignments in Northern Somalia for up to 50 Somali and Finnish health professionals.

It counteracts the demographic ageing and enhances Europe’s economic potential by meeting the needs of an increasingly demanding labour market and by contributing to socio-cultural enrichment. Due to the circumstances surrounding the migration process, migrant populations have been found to disproportionately face mental health problems when compared to host populations. On the other hand, in today’s EU multicultural societies, mental health care approaches are often ineffective, resulting in major disparities especially affecting migrant populations.

Cultural Competence and Training in Mental Health Practice in Europe: Strategies to Implement Competence and Empower Practitioners

This paper aims to highlight the common denominator of cultural training demands and responses of mental health professionals, regardess of the healthcare system, the Europen country of the migrant community concerned, as well as the basic elements to efficiently implement cultural competency within the mental healthcare setting.
