Migration Health Research Area/Expertise
Migration and migrant health. I was born and bought up in Kochi within the main city limits. From my childhood, I have heard people calling "PANDY" for Tamilians and "BENGALIS" for people from the North. They dominated in all jobs. They worked wholeheartedly and earned better pay than what they could get in their homeland. The Keralites were also happy to give them a job as they were paid less than local workers. At present, a day of a strike by migrants as usually done by Keralites would bring Kerala economy to standstill whether its agriculture or construction sector. Yet their contribution is less acknowledged and has always been blamed for the spread of diseases. I wish to continue my studies in migrant health issues and to start different intervention programs that help governments to implement a health program which would help in better health care for interstate migrant labourers. Academically would like to continue studies and work along with other researchers and students interested in migrant health studies. My MPH dissertation was titled “Prevalence of potentially malignant oral disorders: a comparative study among interstate migrant labourers and general population in Kochi corporation” where the prevalence of potentially malignant disorders was more among migrants than the residents. Now I am a PhD student working broadly on health system responsiveness towards internal migration in Kerala.
