Migration Health Research Area/Expertise
My engagement with the domain of migration health started with my master’s thesis project. My master’s thesis dealt with aspects of self-efficacy in individuals who were living with HIV in Denmark. In this comparative study, I looked at how living with HIV impacts the wellbeing (measured in terms of self-efficacy) of individuals differently based on their ethnic background. Broadly, I compared groups of people from Danish ethnic background, other European ethnicities, and non-European ethnic backgrounds. The latter were the most affected groups due to a multitude of factors they were already affected by in their everyday lives.

My second engagement with this domain is ongoing. I am currently working on my doctoral thesis exploring how the international migration of children impacts the health and wellbeing of left-behind older parents (60 years and above). My study is based in Nepal. In this research I am looking at health and wellbeing of left-behind older parents in terms of their health-related quality of life, as well as overall perception of their lives with regards to their children’s migration. This is a comparative study wherein I surveyed and interviewed comparable parents of non-migrant/stayer children along with the parents of migrant children.

I am currently working on my discussion chapter and have also developed a manuscript from the analysis. I also worked on a baseline evaluation project with my PhD supervisor in 2018 evaluating the “Refugee Health and Wellbeing: A policy and action plan for Queensland, 2017–2020”.
