Migration Health Research Area/Expertise
Michael Flynn is an applied anthropologist whose research lies at the intersection of migration, work, and health and focuses on developing institutional policies and practices to improve the health of immigrant workers. His interests include social determinates of health, organizational culture, and intervention effectiveness. He is currently a project officer with the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) where he leads a program of research to better understand and improve the occupational health of immigrant workers. He also serves NIOSH as the coordinator for the Occupational Health Equity Program which promotes research, outreach, and prevention activities that reduce health inequalities for workers who are at higher risk for occupational injury and illness as a result of social and economic structures historically linked to discrimination or exclusion. Prior to coming to NIOSH in 2004, Michael worked for ten years in non-governmental organizations in Guatemala, Mexico, and the United States. He is a member of the National Advisory Committee for the Ventanillas de Salud health promotion program of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He is also a research fellow of the Consortium for Multicultural Psychology Research at Michigan State University. He has a Master’s degree in anthropology from the University of Cincinnati is currently pursuing a PhD in anthropology at the University of Kentucky.
