This project intends to contribute to limiting the further spread of HIV/AIDS in Angola and Zambia in the context of the expected return of up to 25,000 Angolan nationals and the surrounding local population. Through this project, IOM aims to raise levels of HIV/AIDS awareness in Zambia and Angola, and to increase the capacity of returnees to utilize information to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. The project will target Angolan returnees from Zambia with peer education and skills development training to ensure the effective transfer of human resources to Angola. Peer educators and community health workers will serve as point people working in the various sectors of the HIV/AIDS information and skills development campaign (sports, drama, nutrition, agriculture, Life Skills, etc) providing refugees with information pertinent to each sector.

IOM will conduct health assessments and treatment services for government-funded migrants going to Australia. The pre-departure health screening services will be based on the new protocol the purpose of which is to reduce the post-arrival medical issues that are presented by Refugee and humanitarian visa holders and to ensure better follow up and treatment on-shore of health problems that have been identified at the point of departure. The project will start in Kigoma and Tanzania, and will expand to other countries in East and West Africa, Middle East and South-East Asia in 2006.

The primary objectives of this proposed three-year project is to contribute to the efforts of the Cambodian Government meet its obligations under the Coordinated Mekong Ministerial Initiative Against Trafficking (COMMIT) through increasing awareness levels to the risk and avoidance mechanisms of trafficking and providing complementary psychosocial assistance to vulnerable/marginalized border populations. The project will build on the successful model developed through the Childhood Mental Health and Anti-Trafficking Project in Rattanak Mondul District. The key programme strategy of this project was to use a combination of school and community based activities to disseminate reliable information on the dangers and consequences of trafficking and to provide psychosocial support to particularly vulnerable children and their families as a means to increase school attendance and reduce vulnerability to trafficking.

Assisted Voluntary Return of Irregular Migrants with a Reintegration Fund for Vulnerable Returnees 2006-2007 (AVRIM-2006-2007)

In addition to the return assistance provided under the AVRIM programme in terms of obtaining travel documents and facilitating return travel, IOM London proposes an extra component, a Reintegration Fund which would be utilised towards offering reintegration assistance in the countries of origin for 100 vulnerable returnees under the programme. IOM would apply the term "vulnerable" to victims of trafficking, unaccompanied minors and individuals with medical needs. The Reintegration Fund will strengthen these returnees' capabilities to become self sufficient upon return. IOM will provide: pre-screening for eligibility to return, seeking Home Office approval, pre-departure information and advice on voluntary return, facilitate the acquisition of relevant travel documentation, assistance with departure in the UK and at arrival in the country of origin and onward transportation to the returnee's final destination in their home country. Programme for the Enhancement of Transit and Irregular Migration Management in Libya (TRIM)

Targeting stranded irregular migrants in Libya as well as officials and staff of the Libyan ministries/agencies with migration management functions, the Action will strengthen Libya's capacities to address irregular transit migration in a humane and orderly manner. This will be achieved through the enhancement of temporary reception centres, the provision of improved health services to stranded migrants and the establishment of a substantial assisted voluntary return programme with meaningful reintegration components for selected countries of origin. These programmatic activities will be supported by preventive measures such as the targeted dissemination of information on the risks related to irregular migration, as well as the promotion of a constructive dialogue between Libya and identified origin and destination countries towards reinforced cooperation for migration management.
Humanitarian Assistance for Mobile Population and Deported Migrants at Beitbridge Border Town, Zimbabwe (HADM-BBT II)

The project aims to provide humanitarian assistance to deported migrants and other mobile populations through the establishment of a Reception and Support Centre at the Beitbridge border between Zimbabwe and South Africa. The project will assist these population groups with transportation, food, health, and awareness-raising activities on HIV and AIDS as well as on inform them on issues related to irregular migration, including, trafficking, smuggling, human and migrant rights etc. Training will be provided to South African and Zimbabwean border officials, police and local service providers on issues relating to migration and human and migrant rights. A tripartite agreement between the Ministries of Home Affairs in South Africa and Zimbabwe and IOM, focusing on the issue of deportations to Zimbabwe, will be explored. Drinkable Water for the Area of Guiglo and in Particular Internally Displaced People (CERF - Water)

The project serves as a response to the most immediate needs of the IDPs in the CATD (Centre d'Accueil Temporaire des Déplacés) in terms of access to potable water, thereby reducing the security threats posed to women and children fetching water from water points outside the transit centre. This will also reduce the rate of water-borne diseases among the IDPs.

This study will identify gaps and make recommendations about how to mainstream HIV and AIDS in counter trafficking (CT) responses in East and Southern Africa. It will review existing research on the linkages between human trafficking and HIV vulnerability. It will also look at programme and policy responses from IOM and other organisations where HIV and AIDS have been mainstreamed or integrated into CT responses, and identify examples of good practices.
