The project intends to assess the complex living conditions and the eventual options for a voluntary return of African asylum seekers living with HIV/AIDS and residing regularly or irregularly in the Netherlands. The project builds on the expertise during the two earlier Return Migration & Health (RMH) projects during which research was conducted on the relation between lack of health and return, an extensive network was established linking the expertise on voluntary return facilitation with medical health service provision and experience was gained with individual referrals and return preparation for persons with medical condition.
Voluntary Return of Irregular Migrants Stranded in Bosnia and Herzegovina (IMSB) - 2006

This project will strengthen the mechanism in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) to facilitate the voluntary return of stranded irregular migrants in the country ) to their respective countries of origin. The project will assist migrants in returning to their home countries in a safe and dignified manner and will also help to alleviate the strain on scarce resources of the BiH State. Stranded irregular migrants who return to their home countries can serve as powerful examples of the perils of irregular migration and act as a disincentive to others considering making the journey to the west in an illegal manner. The project will enable up to 250 stranded migrants to return to their countries of origin by providing them with pre-departure arrangements, care and maintenance,medical screening and return transportation assistance. Actions to Support HIV-AIDS Evidence Based Strategy in Italy

This project intends to implement an HIV/AIDS socio-behavioural research targeted at migrants living in Italy, to create a database of relevant projects on HIV and migrants as well as to assess the impact of HIV prevention material on migrants. Specific objectives are 1) to realize a qualitative and quantitative research to identify a profile for migrants with respect to information, risk perception, sexual and HIV/AIDS related behaviours, 2) to build up a data base - and its web interface - on HIV prevention for migrants, 3) to identify HIV/AIDS prevention strategies able to reach the migrants, that could be integrated within the national prevention plan, 4) to program trainings ad hoc devoted to relevant operators in order to transfer strategies that have been elaborated in the previous stage of the project.

This project supports the Ethiopian government's efforts in the fight against HIV/AIDS, and the prevention of human trafficking within and/or from Ethiopia. The project seeks to sensitize junior high and high school students on pertinent issues regarding trafficking and HIV/AIDS while encouraging them to pursue their education, both in schools and within the informal sector. Information dissemination through cartoon booklets, educational audio cassettes and educational music concerts staged in the four targeted cities of Addis Ababa, Awassa, Bahir Dar and Dire Dawa will be done. Peer education training will also be conducted in order to ensure sustainability of activities and with view to maintaining continued discussion in schools among students.

IOM will bring together stakeholders and parties involved in health programs that target migrants and mobile populations in the region. The first day will be dedicated to the theme of 'Migrant's Health'. IOM will commission researchers to prepare three baseline studies to serve as keynote papers for the plenary sessions of the Workshop for EAC Member countries. The research will be conducted through a mix of primary (interviews), secondary research (reviewing documentation), as well as analysis and discussion of initial findings with Government parties and other stakeholders. Various speakers will be invited to contribute their experiences and views on this theme. The second day will be dedicated to the theme of 'Migration of Health Workers'. The overall objective of the project is to protect the rights and dignity of Central American migrant women and minors in Mexico's southern border. The project goal is to provide assistance to migrant women and minors victims of violence and sexual abuse in the area of Tapachula, at Mexico southern´s border, and promote their rights through direct medical and psychological assistance and strengthening sustainable institutional capacities at the local level to guarantee protection and follow-up mechanisms.

Capacity Building for the National Victims Assistance Units in Zambia (CBNVU)

The project's focus is to provide support to the National Victims Support Unit. IOM is proposing to increase the capacity of existing victim support units in ten (10) district police stations within Zambia. Two officers per district (see list of district stations below) will receive training in: 1) investigations and interviewing skills, 2) psychosocial counselling, and 3) legal counselling for victims. IOM will provide minor renovations for interview rooms within these same district offices, to provide security, safety and confidentiality for victims during police investigations and interviews. In addition, to promote data-for-decision making and information sharing, computers will be purchased to improve data collection techniques and report generation at the National Victims Support Unit in Lusaka.
