Enhancing Integrated Capacity and Assistance to Crisis Affected Populations on Disease Outbreaks, Natural Disasters and Returns in Burundi

The overall objective of this project is to contribute to the national and local efforts undertaken to prevent and respond to potential disease outbreaks and natural disasters, and to reintegrate displaced populations within communities.

Supporting Conflict Prevention and Resolution through Reinforced, Comprehensive Peacebuilding Mechanisms in Burundi

This project aims to promote the resolution of community conflicts, peaceful coexistence and social cohesion in communities, through strengthening the administrative and procedural capacity of law enforcement officials in the management of community reconciliation activities and psychosocial healing by professional mobile teams, and strengthening the role of women mediators, youth committed to peace and paralegals in community conflict resolution.

Psychosocial Support and Protection Mechanism for Expelled Burundian Migrants

Between 2013 and 2014, in addition to IDPs and returnees, 45,533 Burundian migrants (51% women, 49% men), who, had never regularized their stay in Tanzania, were deported by the Tanzanian Government due to the recent immigration law. Due to the rapid expulsion of Burundian migrants from Tanzania to Burundi, many left without belongings or in some cases, even their spouses. They arrived in an environment, in particular in communes with high rates of returns, where resources were already stretched.

Displacement Tracking Matrix, Psychosocial Assistance and Community Based Protection, Including Strengthening Communication with Crisis-Affected Communities

Considering IOM's longstanding experience and global capacity in responding to and advocating for appropriate responses to migration crises, including its extensive experience in information/data management for the benefit of affected populations, IOM will expand the DTM to systematically collect comprehensive data on displaced populations in the country's most affected provinces. Humanitarian needs of the displaced population will be identified and subsequently analysed and referred to the relevant sectors.

Assistance in Shelter/NFI to Displaced and Flood-Affected Households

The IOM shelter and settlements response to the rains in Burundi will aim to help safeguard the health, security, privacy and dignity of 10,800 flood displaced/affected people or 1,680 affected households. It will primarily achieve this through the provision of 900 essential shelter kits and 900 non-food items kits, accompanied with construction support. In so doing, it will support those people within host families, or repairing their damaged houses.

Assistance to Burundian Vulnerable Migrants and Host Communities in Burundi

This project aims to address immediate and unmet emergency needs of returnees from Tanzania, and enhance reintegration opportunities and community stabilisation initiatives for the most vulnerable IDPs, and returnees, as well as improve the absorption capacity in four provinces among the host communities that are most impacted by population movements through the implementation of targeted community stabilization activities.

Diaspora Engagement for Migration and Development in Burundi

The objective of this project is to assist the Government of Burundi in mobilizing diaspora resources for the development of Burundi and to reduce national poverty in the long run. The project’s objective will be achieved by mobilizing experts for the purpose of sharing their knowledge at key institutions (universities and medical schools). The project will also contribute to enhancing the capacity of the newly established Diaspora Directorate, assist the GoB in creating an effective partnership with its diaspora, and facilitate the drafting of Burundi’s national Diaspora Policy.
