Coverage of migrant and refugee data is incomplete and of insufficient quality in European health information systems. This is not because we lack the knowledge or technology. Rather, it is due to various political factors at local, national and European levels, which hinder the implementation of existing knowledge and guidelines. This reflects the low political priority given to the topic, and also complex governance challenges associated with migration and displacement. We review recent…
Read moreManaging the Paradox of Conflictual Policy and Strategy Regarding Health of Irregular Migrants: Perspective From Europe and Africa
Author/s: Ursula Trummer, Michela Martini, Sabelo Mbokazi
Irregular migrants belong to the most vulnerable migrant groups. Health threats associated with an irregular status are high, and access to health services is severely restricted globally. Concerning migration aspects, a common public narrative for Europe and Africa is that Africa is sending thousands of migrants to embark on an irregular life-threatening journey of migration to Europe every year. Although this is a well documented reality, it is by far not the most important migration…
Read moreHIV among migrants in precarious circumstances in the EU and European Economic Area

HIV epidemics in the EU and European Economic Area are increasingly diverse in transmission modes and groups affected. Substantial gaps in data exist on HIV burden and access to the HIV continuum of care among migrants living in this region, particularly individuals in precarious circumstances such as migrants with irregular status. Migrants have a higher HIV burden compared with the general population, and high rates of post-migration HIV acquisition. Migrants also face challenges in access…

Abstract
HIV epidemics in the EU/EEA (European Union/European Economic Area ) are increasingly diverse in terms of transmission modes and people affected. This systematic search and review synthesize the evidence on vulnerable migrants living in this region (including but not limited to people with irregular status). Review findings show that many migrants carry a higher HIV burden than the general population. Of concern are high proportions of post-migration HIV acquisition…
Migration and mental health care in the European Union. In: Dinesh Bhugra (ed) Oxford Textbook of Migrant Psychiatry
Author/s: Guglielmo Schininà, Geertrui Lanneau
This chapter analyses legal and factual aspects of the provision of mental health care for migrants in the European Union (EU), framing migrants’ access to mental health care within the wider contexts of migration in the EU, the EU’s policies for migrants’ integration and access to health care, and EU policies on mental health care for all. The rates of various psychiatric disorders may vary across migrant groups and host populations. The issue of how services can be made more accessible for…
Read moreMission impossible? Harmonising migration health data across countries
Author/s: Dominik Zenner
Abstract
Despite significant efforts, for example within the EU/ EEA, there are currently only few Health information systems (HIS) which are standardized across international borders, and even within countries there can be significant variations. Modalities, technologies and terminologies differ. In the field of migration health, challenges and variations can be more significant. This talk will explore the specific challenges in migration health-…
Migrant Health in the Nexus of Universal Health Coverage and Global Health Security. In: Romaniuk S., Thapa M., Marton P. (eds) The Palgrave Encyclopedia of Global Security Studies
Author/s: Federica Viello, Elena Val, Dominik Zenner
In this chapter, Global Health Security and Universal Health Coverage are analyzed underlining the possible synergies and differences between them and the links to health, even as the two take very different routes and approaches. The actors engaged in each approach may often belong to the same entity, but they may also differ in terms of their focus, competences, and understanding of the societal needs. The two approaches are presented separately and then weaved together to demonstrate how…
