Tuberculin Skin Tests versus Interferon-Gamma Release Assays in Tuberculosis Screening among Immigrant Visa Applicants
Author/s: Chuke SO, Yen NT, Laserson KF, Phuoc NH, Trinh NA, Nhung DT, Mai VT, Qui AD, Hai HH, Loan le TH, Jones WG, Whitworth WC, Shah JJ, Painter JA, Mazurek GH, Maloney SA
Objective: Use of tuberculin skin tests (TSTs) and interferon gamma release assays (IGRAs) as part of tuberculosis (TB) screening among immigrants from high TB-burden countries has not been fully evaluated.
Methods: Prevalence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection (MTBI) based on TST, or the QuantiFERON-TB Gold test (QFT-G), was determined among immigrant applicants in Vietnam bound for the United States (US); factors associated with test results and discordance…

Can migration health assessments become a mechanism for global public health good?
Author/s: Kolitha Wickramage, Davide Mosca
Abstract: Migrant health assessments (HAs) consist of a medical examination to assess a migrant’s health status and to provide medical clearance for work or residency based on conditions defined by the destination country and/or employer. We argue that better linkages between health systems and migrant HA processors at the country level are needed to shift these from being limited as an instrument of determining non-admissibility for purposes of visa issuance, to a process…

Author/s: Kaisa Kontunen, Barbara Rijks, Nenette Motus, Jenna Iodice, Caroline Schultz, Davide Mosca
Migrants around the world significantly contribute to the economies of countries of origin and destination alike. Despite the growing number of migrants in today's globalized world, the conditions in which migrants travel, live and work can carry exceptional risks to their physical and mental well-being. These risks are often linked to restrictive immigration and employment policies, economic and social factors and dominant anti-migrant sentiments in societies, and are…
Read moreGlobalization of leptospirosis through travel and migration
Author/s: Medhani Bandara, Mahesha Ananda, Kolitha Wickramage, Elisabeth Berger, Suneth Agampodi
Abstract: Leptospirosis remains the most widespread zoonotic disease in the world, commonly found in tropical or temperate climates. While previous studies have offered insight into intra-national and intra-regional transmission, few have analyzed transmission across international borders. Our review aimed at examining the impact of human travel and migration on the re-emergence of Leptospirosis. Results suggest that alongside regional environmental and occupational…
Read moreHaemoglobinopathies in Europe: health and migration policy perspectives
Author/s: Patricia Aguilar Martinez, Michael Angastiniotis, Androulla Eleftheriou, Beatrice Gulbis, Maria Del Mar Pereira, Roumyana Petrova-Benedict, Joan-Lluis Corrons
Abstract
- Background: Major haemoglobinopathies (MH), such as thalassaemia syndromes (Thal) and sickle cell disorders (SCD), are genetic defects associated with chronic anaemia and other complications. In Europe, MH are rare diseases (RD) but their prevalence is significantly growing in many countries due to mobility and migration flows.
- This creates a growing health problem in the EU that has not…
Maternal mortality revisited: the application of the new ICD-MM classification system in reference to maternal deaths in Sri Lanka
Author/s: Suneth Agampodi, Kolitha Wickramage, Thilini Agampodi, Upuli Thennakoon, Nirasha Jayathilaka, Dhammika Karunaratha, Sasanka Alagiyawanna
Abstract
- Background: The recently published WHO guidelines on applications of ICD-10 to deaths during pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium (ICD-MM) aimed at enabling a comprehensive framework for international comparison of maternal deaths, which includes maternal suicides as a direct cause of maternal deaths. At present, most developing countries do not include suicide as a maternal death.
- Methods: We…

Results from early programmatic implementation of Xpert MTB/RIF testing in nine countries
Author/s: Jacob Creswell, Andrew Collins, Emmanuel Andre, Mark Micek, Ahmed Bedru, E Jane Carter, Rajendra-Prasa Yadav, Andrei Mosneaga, Bishwa Raj, Sayera Banu, Miranda Brouwer, Lucie Blok, Suvanand Sahu, Lucica Ditiu
Background: The Xpert MTB/RIF assay has garnered significant interest as a sensitive and rapid diagnostic tool to improve detection of sensitive and drug resistant tuberculosis. However, most existing literature has described the performance of MTB/RIF testing only in study conditions; little information is available on its use in routine case finding. TB REACH is a multi-country initiative focusing on innovative ways to improve case notification.
