Abstract
This paper describes an action framework for countries with low tuberculosis (TB) incidence (<100 TB cases per million population) that are striving for TB elimination. The framework sets out priority interventions required for these countries to progress first towards “pre-elimination” (<10 cases per million) and eventually the elimination of TB as a public health problem (less than one case per million). TB epidemiology in most low-incidence countries is characterized…

Abstract
Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is characterized by the presence of immune responses to previously acquired Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection without clinical evidence of active tuberculosis (TB). Here we report evidence-based guidelines from the World Health Organization for a public health approach to the management of LTBI in high-risk individuals in countries with high or middle upper income and TB incidence of <100 per 100 000 per year. The guidelines…
Read moreThe movement of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis across borders in East Africa needs a regional and global solution
Author/s: Cain KP, Marano N, Kamene M, Sitienei J, Mukherjee S, Galev A, Burton J, Nasibov O, Kioko J, De Cock KM
Summary Points
• Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB) and other deadly infectious diseases commonly occur in states suffering from political turmoil and armed conflict.
• The same conditions that promote MDR TB and other diseases often diminish the capacity of the public health system to address these needs, leading patients to seek care in other countries.
• In East Africa, a large number of patients from Somalia with MDR TB crossed the border to Kenya seeking…
Introducing new tuberculosis diagnostics: the impact of Xpert MTB/ RIF testing on case notifications in Nepal
Author/s: Jacob Creswell, B Rai, R Wali, S Sudrungrot, LM Adhikari, R Pant, S Pyakurel, D Uranw, AJ Codlin
SETTING: The Xpert® MTB/RIF assay is a highly sensitive molecular test with the potential to improve tuberculosis (TB) case detection. However, evidence supporting this potential at a programme level is minimal.
METHODS: Xpert testing following smear microscopy and chest X-ray was implemented as part of routine case finding in 16 districts of Eastern Nepal. Changes in TB case notification were evaluated based on a pre/post analysis, as were expected notifications…
Read moreImpact of and response to increased tuberculosis prevalence among Syrian refugees compared with Jordanian tuberculosis prevalence: case study of a tuberculosis public health strategy
Author/s: Susan Cookson, Hiba Abaza, Kevin Clarke, Ann Burton, Nadia Sabrah, Khaled Rumman, Nedal Odeah, Marwan Naoum
By the summer of 2014, the Syrian crisis resulted in a regional humanitarian emergency with 2.9 million refugees, including 608,000 in Jordan. These refugees access United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) sponsored clinics or Jordan Ministry of Health clinics, including tuberculosis diagnosis and treatment. Tuberculosis care in Syria has deteriorated with destroyed health infrastructure and drug supply chain. Syrian refugees may have undiagnosed tuberculosis; therefore, the…
Read moreLabor migrants in St Petersburg: disease awareness, behavioral
Author/s: Boris Sergeyev, Igor Kazanets, Larisa Ivanova, Irina Zhuravleva, Natalya Isaeva, Tuula Vasankari, Arvid Nyberg, Mikko Vauhkonnen
While there is a number of studies on prevalence of risk behaviors with respect to communicable diseases among labor migrants in Russia, practically no systematic research linking together their socio-economic background, life circumstances, awareness levels and information sources on communicable diseases has been conducted. At the same time in designing disease prevention campaigns, program planners need to take these factors into account. Responding to these demands,…
