Introduction: The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is characterised by high and complex migration flows, yet little is known about the health of migrant populations, their levels of under-immunisation, and access to healthcare provision. Data are needed to support regional elimination and control targets for key diseases and the design and delivery of programmes to improve health outcomes in these groups. This protocol describes a suite of seven systematic reviews that aim to…
Read moreHIV among migrants in precarious circumstances in the EU and European Economic Area
Author/s: Christiana Nöstlinger, Theo Cosaert, Ella Van Landeghem, Jef Vanhamel, Gary Jones, Dominik Zenner, Jantine Jacobi, Teymur Noori, Anastasia Pharris, Alyna Smith, Rosalie Hayes, Elena Val Elisabeth Waagensen, Elena Vovc, Sarita Sehgal, Prof Marie Laga, Henk Van Renterghem
HIV epidemics in the EU and European Economic Area are increasingly diverse in transmission modes and groups affected. Substantial gaps in data exist on HIV burden and access to the HIV continuum of care among migrants living in this region, particularly individuals in precarious circumstances such as migrants with irregular status. Migrants have a higher HIV burden compared with the general population, and high rates of post-migration HIV acquisition. Migrants also face challenges in access…
Read moreHealth and illness in migrants and refugees arriving in Europe: analysis of the electronic Personal Health Record system
Author/s: Dominik Zenner, Ana Requena Méndez, Steffen Schillinger, Elena Val, Kolitha Wickramage
Abstract
Background
The electronic Personal Health Record (ePHR) is a health information system that registers health data on newly arriving migrants and was implemented in eight European countries (Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia). This is a cross-sectional study aimed to describe the health problems and health status of all migrants attended at health clinics as part of the health assessment…
Health and Illness in Newly Arrived Migrants and Refugees Arriving at Europe's Shores: Analysis of the Electronic Personal Health Record System in Seven Countries
Author/s: Dominik Zenner, Ana Requena-Méndez, Steffen Schillinger, Elena Val, Kolitha Wickramage
Background: The electronic Personal Health (ePHR) Record is a health information system for newly arriving migrants that has been implemented in seven European countries (Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Serbia and Slovenia). This is a cross-sectional study of all migrants who attended as part of the health assessment programme established in the reception centres between 2016 and 2019 that provides a comprehensive overview of illness and health in the migrant cohort.…
Read moreUnderstanding health inequities among transiting migrants within the Middle East and North African (MENA) region through strengthening data systems
Author/s: Ana Requena-Méndez, Kolitha Wickramage, Chiaki Ito, Bouchra Assarag, Mahmoud Hilali, Anna Deal, Sara Arias, Dominik Zenner, Wafa Chemao-Elfihri, Sally Hargreaves, the Migrant Health MENA Working Group
The editorial argues that failure to integrate migration variables within the health information systems in many countries in the MENA region means that, to date, there has been an absence of comprehensive and disaggregated epidemiological data on infectious disease prevalence (including COVID-19), outbreaks, and vaccine coverage, making it difficult to map health disparities and inform evidence-based policy and service delivery.
A rapid review of immunisation coverage, vaccine delivery and migration in North Africa amongst migrant populations (PROSPERO 2021 CRD42021256369)
Author/s: Anna Deal, Sara Arias, Sally Hargreaves, Ana Requena, Mahmoud Hilali, Wafa Chemao, Bouchra Assarag, Ouahchi Hamdouni Anissa, Habib Ghédira, Kolitha Wickramage, Kaisa Kontunen, Janice Lopez, Chiaki Ito, Jannet Bahri, Dominik Zenner
In this systematic review we are trying to answer these specific questions: What is the immunisation coverage among migrant populations in North Africa for key vaccines, and are there variations among migrant subpopulations? Where and by who are vaccines administered to migrant populations? What are the key delivery mechanisms (IOM, NGOs, government structures)? What are the barriers and facilitators to migrant populations accessing vaccines in this region? What is the quality and quantity…
Read moreCasting Light on an Underserved Population: Evidence Review of HIV Among Migrants in the EU/EEA
Author/s: Christiana Nöstlinger, Theo Cosaert, Ella Van Landeghem, Jef Vanhamel, Dominik Zenner, Jantine Jacobi, Teymur Noori, Anastasia Pharris, Alyna Smith, Rosalie Hayes, Elena Val, Elisabeth Waagensen, Elena Vovc, Sarita Sehgal, Marie Laga, Henk Van Renterghem
Abstract
HIV epidemics in the EU/EEA (European Union/European Economic Area ) are increasingly diverse in terms of transmission modes and people affected. This systematic search and review synthesize the evidence on vulnerable migrants living in this region (including but not limited to people with irregular status). Review findings show that many migrants carry a higher HIV burden than the general population. Of concern are high proportions of post-migration HIV acquisition…
Mission impossible? Harmonising migration health data across countries
Author/s: Dominik Zenner
Abstract
Despite significant efforts, for example within the EU/ EEA, there are currently only few Health information systems (HIS) which are standardized across international borders, and even within countries there can be significant variations. Modalities, technologies and terminologies differ. In the field of migration health, challenges and variations can be more significant. This talk will explore the specific challenges in migration health-…

Migrant Health in the Nexus of Universal Health Coverage and Global Health Security. In: Romaniuk S., Thapa M., Marton P. (eds) The Palgrave Encyclopedia of Global Security Studies
Author/s: Federica Viello, Elena Val, Dominik Zenner
In this chapter, Global Health Security and Universal Health Coverage are analyzed underlining the possible synergies and differences between them and the links to health, even as the two take very different routes and approaches. The actors engaged in each approach may often belong to the same entity, but they may also differ in terms of their focus, competences, and understanding of the societal needs. The two approaches are presented separately and then weaved together to demonstrate how…
