Abstract
This paper describes an action framework for countries with low tuberculosis (TB) incidence (<100 TB cases per million population) that are striving for TB elimination. The framework sets out priority interventions required for these countries to progress first towards “pre-elimination” (<10 cases per million) and eventually the elimination of TB as a public health problem (less than one case per million). TB epidemiology in most low-incidence countries is characterized…

Abstract
Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is characterized by the presence of immune responses to previously acquired Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection without clinical evidence of active tuberculosis (TB). Here we report evidence-based guidelines from the World Health Organization for a public health approach to the management of LTBI in high-risk individuals in countries with high or middle upper income and TB incidence of <100 per 100 000 per year. The guidelines…

The first use of the global oral cholera vaccine emergency stockpile: lessons from South Sudan
Author/s: Abdinasir Abubakar, Andrew Azman, John Rumunu, Iza Ciglenecki, Trina Helderman, Haley West, Justin Lessler, David Sack, Stephen Martin, William Perea, Dominique Legros, Frnacisco, Luquero
A global oral cholera vaccine (OCV) stockpile was established in 2013 to improve rapid access to the vaccine in outbreaks and emergencies in which cholera risk is high. The first deployment from the global OCV stockpile was to South Sudan in 2014 because of high cholera risk from massive population displacements within the civil war. 256,700 doses of OCV were delivered, with high coverage, throughout the country as part of a comprehensive cholera prevention strategy by multiple agencies,…

Read moreIntroducing new tuberculosis diagnostics: the impact of Xpert MTB/ RIF testing on case notifications in Nepal
Author/s: Jacob Creswell, B Rai, R Wali, S Sudrungrot, LM Adhikari, R Pant, S Pyakurel, D Uranw, AJ Codlin
SETTING: The Xpert® MTB/RIF assay is a highly sensitive molecular test with the potential to improve tuberculosis (TB) case detection. However, evidence supporting this potential at a programme level is minimal.
METHODS: Xpert testing following smear microscopy and chest X-ray was implemented as part of routine case finding in 16 districts of Eastern Nepal. Changes in TB case notification were evaluated based on a pre/post analysis, as were expected notifications…

Author/s: Susan Cookson, Hiba Abaza, Kevin Clarke, Ann Burton, Nadia Sabrah, Khaled Rumman, Nedal Odeah, Marwan Naoum
By the summer of 2014, the Syrian crisis resulted in a regional humanitarian emergency with 2.9 million refugees, including 608,000 in Jordan. Author/s: Boris Sergeyev, Igor Kazanets, Larisa Ivanova, Irina Zhuravleva, Natalya Isaeva, Tuula Vasankari, Arvid Nyberg, Mikko Vauhkonnen
While there is a number of studies on prevalence of risk behaviors with respect to communicable diseases among labor migrants in Russia, practically no systematic research linking together their socio-economic background, life circumstances, awareness levels and information sources on communicable diseases has been conducted. At the same time in designing disease prevention campaigns, program planners need to take these factors into account. Responding to these demands,…
