Understanding the challenges and gaps in community engagement interventions for COVID-19 prevention strategies in Rohingya refugees: a qualitative study with frontline workers and community representatives

Background: Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh are vulnerable to infectious diseases such as COVID-19 due to the crowded living conditions with fragile shelters, and limited water, sanitation and hygiene facilities and practices. While risk communication and community engagement (RCCE) is the cornerstone of outbreak control, there is limited evidence available on the effectiveness of the RCCE strategies in this setting.

COVID-19 preventive measures in Rohingya refugee camps: An assessment of knowledge, attitude and practice

Background
Although many studies were conducted on COVID-19 knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) among the general population in many countries, very little is known about refugees, particularly Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar. A vast array of risk communication and community engagement (RCCE) interventions were implemented in Cox’s Bazar with the intent of reducing disease transmission by empowering the community to adopt public health measures.

Venezuelan migrants living in Peru: The need for better access to care and data for those with HIV/AIDS

This commentary discusses the project that will explore the impact of sexual behavior, HIV status, and treatment access of Venezuelan migrants in Peru. Using respondent-driven sampling, a network-driven probabilistic method, the biobehavioral survey (BBS) will be implemented in Lima and Trujillo in Peru. The biological and behavioral data collected will help government programs and NGOs improve access to HIV prevention, treatment, and care services in Peru and could serve as a model for other countries in the region housing Venezuelan migrants.

Bridging the gap: Using CHNRI to align migration health research priorities in India with local expertise and global perspectives

Background: Migration and health are increasingly recognised as a global public health priority, but concerns have been raised on the skewed nature of current research and the potential disconnect between health needs and policy and governance responses. The Migration Health South Asia (MiHSA) network led the first systematic research priority-setting exercise for India, aligned with the global call to develop a clearly defined migration health research agenda that will inform research investments and guide migrant-responsive policies by the year 2030.

Cancer in conflict: The impact of the war in Ukraine on Moldova

Europe has not experienced a refugee crisis of this magnitude since the Second World War. The Republic of Moldova, a small European nation bordering western Ukraine, has found itself increasingly in the crosshairs of Russia’s war in Ukraine. Moldova is not a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) nor the European Union (EU), but remains an attractive destination for those displaced by the conflict due to its proximity to Ukraine and Russian-speaking communities. Relative to its population, Moldova has the highest number of refugees per capita in Europe (4.2%).

Implementation of a Curriculum to Optimize Hygiene Behaviors among Refugees and Migrants being Resettled

Health knowledge and behaviors can impact well-being and promote community integration post-arrival for refugees and migrants being resettled. Health and hygiene curricula are efficient and accessible mechanisms to mitigate the risk of chronic and infectious diseases in populations being resettled. This report summarizes a successful interagency/interdisciplinary Uganda-based collaboration between the International Organization for Migration, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the University of Minnesota.

Managing the Paradox of Conflictual Policy and Strategy Regarding Health of Irregular Migrants: Perspective From Europe and Africa

Irregular migrants belong to the most vulnerable migrant groups. Health threats associated with an irregular status are high, and access to health services is severely restricted globally. Concerning migration aspects, a common public narrative for Europe and Africa is that Africa is sending thousands of migrants to embark on an irregular life-threatening journey of migration to Europe every year. Although this is a well documented reality, it is by far not the most important migration pattern in terms of numbers and health threats when looking at Africa.
